ᐈ How to fly a drone: practical guide for beginners

One of man's oldest aspirations is to fly. Although nature has not provided us with the means to do so, it is true that we have achieved it through a multitude of ingenuities that take us through the air ... This magical sensation can also be felt with our feet on the ground, thanks to devices such as drones . Born a few years ago, the passion for these small and fascinating electronic friends knows no borders. If you are one of your surrendered fans and you are looking forward to start handling them, in this post you will learn how to fly a drone with the simplest, most practical and interesting tips.

Continue reading and enter without fear into a world of freedom, control and technology: the drone universe. You will learn how to give them life and enjoy them to the fullest.

How to fly a drone: basic rules

You already have your first drone in its brand new packaging, and you do not see the moment to take it out to start flying. Of course, not all drones are the same: you can choose between mini drones, camera drones, small drones, large drones .... If you have not yet chosen your favorite, we can recommend you the one that best suits you. And now, we are going with what we are most interested in: learning how to fly a drone.

Before taking off, it is convenient to have very clear legislation governing the use of drones; in this case it is recreational or leisure use models (non-commercial, industrial or military), so the rules are quite acceptable.

Actually, rather than facing some rules, we are faced with a series of recommendations based on common sense. Established by the State Aviation Safety Agency (AESA), and come to recommend a controlled use of drones, by people who know how to do it safely, always by day, without endangering third parties ... You can see all the recommendations in the document published by AESA, as quick to read as it is easy to understand.

This is the command of your drone

As we all know, a drone is an unmanned aerial vehicle manipulated by remote control. As simple as that. Therefore, if you know and control the functions of your command you will have half of the learning done, and soon you will enjoy the freedom that your drone brings with confidence and security. Look at the photo on these lines: it shows the command of one of the most interesting beginner drones, the Syma X5SC-1. The controls are similar in most models; we explain them briefly, from left to right and top to bottom.

Speed button and Headless mode: with a small touch you can change the speed of your drone in full flight. Headless mode, on the other hand, is very interesting: when you activate it, the drone's orientation will no longer matter because it will move exactly where you indicate it.

For example, when you move back the movement lever your drone will always be directed to you. This function greatly facilitates learning to those who are just beginning to fly.

- Accelerator: allows you to raise and lower your drone while flying. The more you accelerate, your drone will rise more and more and vice versa. Our advice: try to keep it at a fixed point while you learn to handle it ... and you'll go up later.

- Camera: the button located to the right of the accelerator controls the camera and the video, in case your drone has these functions.

 - On / Off: the central button is used to turn the control on and off.

 - Looping (pirouettes): you will use it to make your drone "dance" in the air and make 360-degree turns. Leave it pressed until it beeps and ends the operation with a movement of the right lever.

 - Movement lever: it is one of the controls that you will use the most, if not the most. With the drone stabilized in the air, it will allow you to move it forward and backward (forward and backward), as well as left and right.

 - Fine adjustment button: this button is the most interesting. Based on small touches, you can advance and rewind your drone precisely, something difficult to achieve with the lever. The same applies to movements to the left and the right. Above all, it will help you to correct the position of your drone when it is deflected when raising it by means of the accelerator: it is enough to go by giving small touches in the opposite direction to that which has been displaced, until correcting the deviation.

Your drone and you: the first flights

Little by little, we are approaching the moment you were waiting for: you are going to fly your drone! With these tips you will be able to master it shortly and you will enjoy it one hundred percent. First, it is important to always know where the drone's head is. If yours has Headless mode and you activate it, it will not be necessary; otherwise, remember to have it located and always stay behind the drone to not get confused with the address (something that always happens at the beginning).

It is also recommended to start flying the drone at a controlled height, more or less 1 meter altitude. Of course, try not to fly the drone below to avoid the "floor effect" (which occurs when the wind "bounces" under the drone and destabilizes it).

If you have started with a small drone or mini drone, you can fly it at home to learn how to control it. In addition, it is essential to know how to land: remember that the drones descend with the force of gravity, so it is convenient to take them delicately downwards by using the accelerator. When it is very close to the ground, it accelerates a little to minimize the impact of the fall.

Things you should NOT do with your drone

Now you know how to fly a drone, at least in theory. But it is also important to know what you should not do. Take note:

Allow the battery to discharge below 20%. It is very harmful for batteries: try to never exceed that threshold of discharge. With landing when the drone tells you (half a blink of the LEDs), it will be enough.

Fly with little battery. As soon as the drone warns that the battery is low, make it land and change it. Thus, the battery will last longer and your drone will remain safe from blows.

- Carry only one or two batteries. Each battery lasts about 7-8 minutes ... and the fun time is limited. If you have a sufficient number of batteries (5, 6 ...), you can fly your drone for much longer.

- Turn the drone on its axis. At least at the beginning, avoid it (except if it has Headless function). You will avoid disorienting yourself.

- Fly the drone near you or your companions. You run the risk of it being launched against you.

- Flying the drone when it's windy. There are so many explanations ...

Problems and solutions

The problems you may encounter while learning how to fly a drone are not complicated to solve; Again, common sense prevails. To prevent your drone from "attacking" you, always send it at a suitable distance that allows you to react in time. To control any loss of control over the drone, lower the throttle; If you are flying at low altitude, let it fall. The drones are resistant, and there are all kinds of spare accessories that will leave yours in perfect condition.

Have you lost sight of your drone? Nothing happens: make it go up and try to visualize it. If you have achieved it and have a "back home" function (recommended), activate it and it will return to where you are. In case you do not locate it, do not turn off the control: move in the direction that the drone was and give small touches to the accelerator to try to hear the sound of the propellers. Finally, a very practical advice: with the Restart function you can recover the proper functioning of your drone if it starts doing "weird things", it has hit or does not work well. Normally, this function is started by placing both levers in the lower right or lower left corner, simultaneously and for 2 seconds. When the lights blink, the drone will have rebooted.
As you can see: learning how to fly a drone is easy and very fun. What did you think of our advice? Surely you have a lot to contribute ... Leave your comment!
