Google and Project Wing start in Australia the first commercial service in the world

After 18 months of testing and more than 3,000 successful shipments, Project Wing receives approval from the Australian Aviation to be able to operate commercially in certain areas of the country. The project started in 2014 as part of the Google X team and later became part of Alphabet, but they have not had an easy path.

There were financial problems and an attempt in 2017 to ally with the Chipotle food chain and the pharmaceutical Chemist Warehouse, but the North American regulation, in this case the FAA, has not yet given them permission to operate. They have done so now in Australia, where the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA) has authorized Wing messenger drones to operate on weekdays, after seven in the morning, and to send food, drink or medication.

Australia, the first country to regulate the service of messenger drones

The approval contemplates some important limitations. Specifically, Project Wing will be able to operate on some 100 houses located in the neighborhoods of Crace, Palmerston and Franklin, in the city of Canberra. Although during the next months the company plans to expand availability to Harrison and Gungahlin.

How does the Wing drone service work? We are not facing an online purchase to use, but the drones messenger service will be to send products from local shops. Alphabet has teamed up with nearby cafes and pharmacies to send food, beverages or medications "in a matter of minutes," according to the company.

Drones will be able to fly to the chosen homes, but they have limitations when it comes to spaces where they can move and when they can do so. They will not be able to fly over main streets, they will not be able to approach people and they will only be able to fly between 07:00 am and 08:00 pm from Monday to Friday and between 08:00 am and 08:00 pm on Saturdays.

The chosen shops that can send their products with the Wing drones are Kickstart Expresso, Capital Chemist, Pure Gelato, Jasper + Myrtle, Bakers Delight, Guzman and Gomez and Drummond Golf. Meanwhile, users whose homes enter the service will receive a safety communication to interact with these drones.

As we see in the videos of the tests, these drones do not arrive to land and simply deposit the package in the garden of the house. A very safe mechanism although it has not yet been detailed how this service would be in a block of flats.

Alphabet advances Amazon in the commercialization of its drones

For the approval of the new regulations, the authorities have taken into account various factors such as the noise made by these drones or the weight of the drone. Anyway, Australia is one of the first countries to regulate the service of drones messengers and most likely, according to Business Insider, the first in the world.

With this announcement today, Wing and Alphabet advance their main rival: Amazon. The ecommerce giant has been testing its drones and messenger robots in the US and the UK for some time, but has not yet received the approval to operate commercially. Although as reported by Associated Press, the company remains "committed to realizing our goal of delivering packages with drones in 30 minutes or less"

Wing, the project led by James Ryan Burgess, also announced last December that it will launch in the spring of 2019 its delivery service in 10 minutes with drones in the center of Helsinki, Finland. We will have to wait to see if the Alphabet drones service also arrives in Europe and continues its expansion. For the time being, Canberra residents can already ask local businesses to send products through these messenger drones.
